Mammatus cloud in Fife
Hi Folks,
Sorry this isn't a recent pic, but I snapped this shot of some interesting mammatus clouds, literally out the back window of my house in Lochgelly, Fife, back on the 4th of March 2007 (12:50GMT). I haven't seen anything as well defined since, in the local area: Unfortunately it didn't result in any storm activity, but it was fascinating to watch it form and then dissipate over a period of about 30-40 minutes. Cheers, Graham |

RE: Mammatus cloud in Fife
They are spectacular and like you say very well defined.
Not all cumulonimbus form in to lightning producing storms, there is some amount of downdraft and instability on that anvil. Thanks for sharing them. Gill-x- Associate fellow: Royal Meteorological Society TORRO SkyWarnUK spotter ID SL002 |

RE: Mammatus cloud in Fife
Thanks Gill, I've seen pics of some amazing examples from the US, but I didn't think this was a bad effort for Fife

RE: Mammatus cloud in Fife
well I have to agree with your comment not a bad effort, my sister phoned me up asking what was going on as she got out of work, looked up and seen the sky covered mammatus clouds, but if you haven't seen them before it could be quite ominous.
They are becoming more frequent and researchers are looking in to atmospheric pollution as a contributing cause. Associate fellow: Royal Meteorological Society TORRO SkyWarnUK spotter ID SL002 |
